5 Habits for a healthy back

If you are dealing with back problems on a regular basis, it’s important to make sure that your everyday habits are “back-friendly. Routine activities such as working at your desk, cleaning the house, gardening driving, or even sleeping can increase the risk of back problems if done without proper form.

Here are some quick tips to take care of your back on day to day basis:

The choice of a good seating:

Maintaining the correct posture is very important for a healthy back. A chair with good lumbar support and a firm seat should be chosen. A small pillow between the lower back and the chair can help in avoiding back pain. The workspace should be arranged smartly, to avoid a lot of twisting while reaching out for frequently used items.

Reduce the burden:

While carrying any briefcase, purse or backpack, make sure you don’t overload it. Avoid back pain while driving: Keep your back upright while sitting on the seat and shift your weight occasionally. In case you have a cruise control, use it whenever you can. Consider using a foam seat cushion for absorbing some of the vibrations. It is advisable to take frequent breaks to stretch when driving long distances.

Maintain a correct sleeping posture:

Avoid sleeping on your stomach. Try to sleep on your side with your knees bent and pulled slightly toward your chest. Your head shouldn’t be propped up too high and the pillow should keep the head level aligned with the spine. Choose a firm mattress for supporting your spine.

Reduce back pain while standing:

Standing for long periods can cause back pain if the posture is not correct. Keep your ears, shoulder and hips aligned and try to pull in your stomach and chin. Change your position frequently while standing for long hours. For maintaining proper posture, you can also use a back brace which supports the back for prolonged periods.
