A sudden cardiac arrest is the result of defective electrical activity of the heart. Patients may have little or no warning, and the disorder usually causes instantaneous death. A heart attack -- myocardial infarction -- typically is caused by clogged coronary arteries that reduce blood flow to the heart muscle.
Dr Sadanand Shetty, Consultant Cardiologist, K J Somaiya Hospital, Super Specialty Centre, shares his insights.- Seeing the severity of the blockage, an Angioplasty procedure with Drug-eluting Stent 3rd Generation was done using Radial Artery Approach (Right hand). The patient responded well to the procedure and was discharged the next day.
Angioplasty gets the blood flowing back to the heart. It opens a coronary artery that is narrowed or blocked during a heart attack by a blood clot, or fat and calcium from a ruptured plaque.
The international accepted door to balloon time (time at which the patient reaches the hospital with on-going heart attack to the time actually the balloon opens the block and restores the blood flow to the muscles of the heart) intervention is within 90 minutes and 3 to 6 hours from the onset of heart attack for blockages need to be removed. It all begins of course with the involvement of the community, from the family physician to the ambulance services, nursing homes to create awareness and help the patient reach the Emergency Centre of Super Specialty hospitals like K J Somaiya Hospital, where this level of care is made possible.
